# Supabase SMTP Configuration - Do You Need It? ## Current Implementation Status ### ✅ What We're Using: - **Resend** for sending verification codes (direct API integration) - **Custom verification system** (6-digit codes stored in memory) - **Supabase Auth** for user management (but NOT for email sending) ### ❌ What We're NOT Using: - Supabase's built-in email service - Supabase SMTP configuration - Supabase email templates --- ## Do You Need Supabase SMTP? ### **Answer: NO, you don't need Supabase SMTP** ✅ **Why?** - We're using **Resend directly** via API - Verification codes are sent through Resend, not Supabase - Supabase SMTP is only needed if you want Supabase to send emails --- ## However: Supabase Email Confirmation Settings Even though we're not using Supabase SMTP, you should check **Supabase Email Confirmation** settings to avoid conflicts: ### Recommended Settings in Supabase Dashboard: 1. **Go to**: [Supabase Dashboard → Authentication → Configuration](https://supabase.com/dashboard/project/sldiqjjgddegffbzjqma/auth/providers) 2. **Email Confirmation Settings**: - **Option A (Recommended)**: **Disable** "Enable email confirmations" - Since we're doing our own email verification with Resend - Prevents Supabase from sending duplicate confirmation emails - **Option B**: Keep enabled but configure SMTP - Only if you want Supabase to also send emails - Requires SMTP configuration (which we're not using) ### Why This Matters: When you call `supabase.auth.signUp()`, Supabase might try to send its own confirmation email if email confirmations are enabled. This could: - Send duplicate emails (one from Resend, one from Supabase) - Confuse users - Require Supabase SMTP to be configured --- ## Recommended Configuration ### In Supabase Dashboard: 1. **Authentication → Configuration → Email Auth** - **Disable** "Enable email confirmations" ✅ - This prevents Supabase from sending emails - We handle all email verification with Resend 2. **Authentication → Email Templates** - You can leave these as default - They won't be used since we disabled email confirmations 3. **Authentication → SMTP Settings** - **You don't need to configure this** ✅ - We're using Resend, not Supabase SMTP --- ## Current Email Flow ``` User Registration: 1. User enters email → Our API sends code via Resend ✅ 2. User verifies code → Our API validates ✅ 3. Account created → supabase.auth.signUp() ✅ (No Supabase email sent because confirmations are disabled) ``` --- ## If You Want to Use Supabase SMTP Instead If you prefer to use Supabase's email service instead of Resend: ### Step 1: Configure Supabase SMTP 1. Go to: [Supabase Dashboard → Authentication → SMTP Settings](https://supabase.com/dashboard/project/sldiqjjgddegffbzjqma/auth/smtp) 2. Configure your SMTP provider (Gmail, SendGrid, etc.) 3. Test the connection ### Step 2: Update Code - Remove Resend integration - Use Supabase's `auth.admin.generateLink()` for password reset - Use Supabase's email confirmation for sign up ### Step 3: Enable Email Confirmations - Enable "Enable email confirmations" in Supabase settings **⚠️ Note**: This would require significant code changes. The current Resend implementation is working and recommended. --- ## Summary ### ✅ What to Do: 1. **Keep using Resend** (current implementation) 2. **Disable Supabase email confirmations** in dashboard 3. **Don't configure Supabase SMTP** (not needed) ### ❌ What NOT to Do: 1. Don't configure Supabase SMTP if using Resend 2. Don't enable email confirmations (causes duplicate emails) 3. Don't mix both systems (choose one) --- ## Quick Check To verify your Supabase settings: 1. Go to: https://supabase.com/dashboard/project/sldiqjjgddegffbzjqma/auth/providers 2. Check "Email" provider settings 3. Make sure "Enable email confirmations" is **OFF** 4. SMTP Settings can remain unconfigured --- ## Current Status ✅ **You're all set!** Just make sure: - Resend API key is configured in `.env.local` ✅ - Supabase email confirmations are disabled ✅ - No Supabase SMTP configuration needed ✅ The verification codes are sent via Resend, and Supabase is only used for user storage and authentication, not email sending.
